Father's Day Weekend Festivities

FRIDAY & SATURDAY JUNE 19-20
A whole weekend’s worth of activities has been planned around Dad's special day.

Friday, 8 am
Join us for some real mountain-style golf at the beautiful Smoky Mountain Country Club in Whittier NC. (exit 72 off Hwy 74 and follow the signs) Our First Annual Stecoah Valley Center Golf Tournament begins with a captain's choice shotgun start at 8 am and continues until 4 pm. Lunch is included. Prizes will be gift certificates to the SMCC pro shop. Pre-registration requested. The outing benefits the Stecoah Building Restoration Fund.

Saturday June 20:
The celebration of Dad continues with a fish fry dinner served family style at two seatings, 5:00 and 6:15 pm. Reservations are required. After dinner, enjoy the one man show, Will Rogers Now! Lance Brown (that's Lance on the left and Will on the right) presents this highly entertaining portrait of a gentle American hero in words, theater and song, and a few rope tricks. Performance starts at 7:30 pm in the historic auditorium.

Dinner & Gospel Singing

SATURDAY
MAY 30
Join us for a Special Dinner and Gospel Singing benefiting the Center. The concert will feature three groups of entertainers: the Living Water Quartet (pictured) of Sylvester, GA, which has been singing Southern Gospel for 20 years; Abiding Hope, a local favorite wtih an upbeat old-time gospel sound; and Mountain Faith Quartet a multi-talented family from Sylva that sings and plays bluegrass gospel, and whose three children have also competed in the Center’s annual Mountain Music Championship.

On the Dinner menu – country style pork ribs, seasoned potato cubes, cole slaw, green beans, biscuits & corn muffins, and fruit cobbler with ice cream. Prices are $14 adult; $10 students (k-12); and $7 children 5 and under. Tax & gratuity not included and reservations are required. One seating at 5:30 pm.

Season tickets (which include all 10 performances) are on sale now on the website, in the gallery or by phone with a credit card (adults $75 each, students $40). We're having a Season Ticket Holder Reception on Friday, May 29 from 5:30-7:30 pm. Ticket holders will be able to choose their seats for the season, see our expanded gallery and auditorium improvements, and enjoy some refreshments. There are still opportunities to "adopt-a-chair" in the auditorium.

All individual tickets go on sale June 1, 2009. Individual tickets will be $10 for adults and $3 for students; except for the Doc Watson & David Holt performance August 8, when tickets will be $35 for adults and $20 for students. Students are considered K-12.

Volunteer Day

THURSDAY MAY 28
Spring Spruce Up: 8 am - 8 pm.
We need your help getting the Center ready for another successful summer season. We have plenty of planting, painting, cleaning and organizing to keep everyone busy. We will provide all the supplies, meals and refreshments; just show up in your work clothes.

Kitchen Classes

SATURDAY MAY 23 Kids in the Kitchen. 10 am - noon. We'll cover safety in the kitchen, reading and understanding labels, preparing and cooking items from each food group. Pizza cups will be the focus of this class for kids ages 10 and up. Pre-registration required. $20/child.

THURSDAY MAY 28
Nancy Norcross will teach "Sourdough from Scratch." 10 am - 1 pm. Students will learn how to make the sourdough starter, bread, rolls, pizza crust, and cinnamon rolls, from beginning to finished product. All ingredients will be provided, and students will be able to take home samples of what they prepare. Pre-registration required. $20/person.

SATURDAY JUNE 13
Chef Michael Gentry of Asheville will prepare 15 great summer side dishes using local, organic produce. 9 am-1 pm. $55 fee covers all supplies, utensils, and students may take creations home to enjoy. Pre-registration required.

National Trails Day

SATURDAY JUNE 6
Backpack and Hiking Cooking. Dick Evans will share his knowledge and expertise on simple and lightweight food for the trail. Dick has been hiking and backpacking in the USA, Europe, and Asia for over 4 decades and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Benton MacKaye Trail Association. The class will be from 9-11 am, followed by a short hike at Stecoah Gap. Pre-registration required. $20/person.
